While many people are concerned about burglaries many are not as concerned about the damage fire can cause to their valuables. In 2001 there are over 400 000 residential fires in the USA, one every 80 seconds with a total property loss of $5.6 Billions and over $14000 per occurrence. A fire proof safe such as SentrySafe SFW123DSB or SentrySafe H3300 can secure your valuables in case of a fire at your home.
How do you know that a safe is Fireproof?. Usually these safes will have a label ( UL Rating) having been tested by the various independent fire testing organizations such as UL (underwriters laboratories), is an independent, non-profit company which provides the fire ratings for filing cabinets and safes and Western Fire Center,(WFCi) which is accredited under the International Accreditation Service (IAS) Acceptance Criteria for Laboratory Accreditation (TL #180)
If you check the label of a Fireproof safe it should stated that it is UL tested- and has passed the UL 72 tests. This test also included an “impact” test which simulates the collapse of a floor or a wall in case of fires. So the safe is heated to a high temperature and then dropped from about 30 feet off the ground and dropped onto a hard surface. ( this is the equivalent of a fall from a third floor or a building). A label should look like what is below:
#1 Label Style Record Protection Equipment
Underwriters Laboratories, Inc
As To Fire Resistance
The fire testing of safes depends on the UL rating it seeks to reach ie 30 mins, 1 hour 2 hour 3 or 4 hours. For 12 hour the product is ted to 1550 degrees F, for 1 hr , 1700 degree, for 2 hours 1850 degrees , 3 hours 1920 degree and 4 hours for 2000 degrees F. The products are heated to those degrees the furnace is turned off and allwoed to cool until there is a drop in internal temperature,. However many products or safes do fail because they interior temperature continues to rise in the closed furnace.
You don’t need to have a 2 hour UL fore rating safe . However some building codes require it , or even higher. However if you live far from a fire station you may want to consider the additional fire protection.
Dont be fooled with safes than are UL listed – you need one with a proper UL rating. Some manufacturers will submit their safes for UL testing – but then they ay fail the test. They still go on to advertise “UL” tested” which especially means nothing.
We have two fire proof safes that we can recommend. These are the SentrySafe SFW123DSB and the SentrySafe H3300. The first one has a UL of 1 hour at 1700 degrees while the H3300 is UL classified for 30 minutes. Both are ETL verified water proof. The first one, SentrySafe SFW123DSB costs about $40 dollars more than SentrySafe H3300. For less than $150 these two safes are good choice.
