The fire testing of safes depends on the UL rating it seeks to reach ie 30 mins, 1 hour 2 hour 3 or 4 hours. For 12 hour the product is ted to 1550 degrees F, for 1 hr , 1700 degree, for 2 hours 1850 degrees , 3 hours 1920 degree and 4 hours for 2000 degrees F. The products are heated to those degrees the furnace is turned off and allwoed to cool until there is a drop in internal temperature,. However many products or safes do fail because they interior temperature continues to rise in the closed furnace.

You don’t need to have a 2 hour UL fore rating safe . However some building codes require it , or even higher. However if you live far from a fire station you may want to consider the additional fire protection.

Dont be fooled with safes than are UL listed – you need one with a proper UL rating. Some manufacturers will submit their safes for UL testing – but then they ay fail the test. They still go on to advertise “UL” tested” which especially means nothing.
